Some context, please (Ireland)

I don't understand this sentence. Maybe some context would be helpful:

In Ireland the cult of Patrick (and thereby Armagh's claim to primacy) were promoted by Uí Néil.

What is Armagh's claim to primacy? I understand 'primacía' and something about the Church, but I don't understand which primacy is referred to, a primacy in Ireland?, the most important cult centre? The context that I have doesn't help at all.

Si Armagh dice que es la que prima, se debe al hecho de que St. Patrick fundó ahí la Archidiócesis, y eso es algo que Uí Néil promocionaba.

In ecclesiastical terms, primacy is the claim to leadership in spiritual matters. So the Catholic church obviously has the Vatican as having primacy. I'm afraid for me, Ireland is a complete blank, but presumably Armagh is the place connected with Saint P.

Sorry, no. It was just an illustration of what primacy meant. I have no idea, but I guess that Armagh claimed primacy in Ireland, but even that was subservient to the Pope.

En este caso, los Uí Néil querían llevarse el cuerpo de San patricio a Armagh, para tener los restos del santo y hacer su iglesia la líder de las demas irlandesas.
Si el culto de San patrick no prosperaba, tener el cuerpo no serviría de nada...

Es que este libro que tengo es horrible (aunque hay compañeros que dicen que está muy bien ). No sé muy bien cómo estaban divididas las islas por entonces y el libro se va de un tema a otro y de un año a otro y no entiendo nada. Poco después dice que la autoridad religiosa no estaba centralizada, pese a las reclamaciones de Canterbury y York. Pero no te aclara si es en Inglaterra, en Irlanda o en todo el Reino Unido.

Algunos libros que van saltando de tema en tema están bien si ya has leído otros previamente. Para no liarme yo solía usar mapas históricos

Patrick the patron saint of Ireland established a church in Armagh well
over a thousand years ago. About two hundred years after his death, the legend of Partick became well established. With recognition of Patrick's status among Catholics in Ireland, Ui Neill wished to establish an archdiocese in Armagh, making it the Catholic religious center of all Ireland.
