@Perikles: The way I'd say Ambarina's sentence would be: "Intentaron engañarlo pero no se lo tragó". (-> No se tragó el engaño.)
I think "no tragó" is some kind of elipsis where "el engaño", "el cuento", "la historia", etc., "should" be understood. :thinking:

I'm not sure, because I find the same meaning in both "no tragó" and "no se lo tragó". The difference that I see is that the first one is intransitive, while the second one is transitive. The RAE (http://buscon.rae.es/draeI/SrvltConsulta?TIPO_BUS=3&LEMA=tragar) says:

8. intr. coloq. Acceder sin convicción a una propuesta.

So, I think that when "tragar" (in this context) has not the pronominal form, this verb has this meaning.

Anyway, "no pondría mi mano en el fuego por defender esta teoría" :thinking: :)
