Hola David! It's so interesting and funny that you mention this because in fact when writing it I was wondering if I should make a joke about the political (in)correctness of this tradition haha.. In Holland there are some that'd be inclined to complain about this, but only a few as people tend to see it as folklore,a heritage from other days as you say-in fact I think it should be honoured as such.I think in general people here wouldn't be inclined to 'read certain things into it' in terms of it being derogatory/discriminative.I like the fact that we can still celebrate this festivity without it being overly criticized - I mean due to our colonial 'heritage'(though I confess this to be somewhat dubious in this respect perhaps) there are many Surinam people especially living in Holland that might easily feel offended, but in fact aren't & are celebrating it too.Folklore/cultural heritage can sometimes be more important than political correctness it seems.¡Muchas gracias a tí!

    Hi Laura
I have told several people I know about Sinterclaas and Zwarte Piet. Everybody I told seemed
really amazed. As you may know burning cork and performing in black face was a very popular
form of entertainment in the United States that faded in the 1930's and became and remains strictly taboo in the 1960's because it is seen a disrespectful to people of African descent. However, people I know from Latin America say such practice is common in their country and is not seen at all derogatory. At carneval time it is common for lots if people including Afro-latinos to darken up more. I find it truly interesting how what's considered a no-no in one country is absoultely OK in others--even in cultures that share a long common history.
It was fun reading and informative.
    Thank you

    Hi Laura,
Have you been to Brussels? I know it's not too far from Amsterdam, It's a capital of Europe that I don't have a clear image of.
    Thanks,
    David

But thanx a lot for your kind thoughts!! Also thanx a lot for your help regarding my rather large text today I really appreciate it!! So you went to see the milkmaid? You know when I was a student I had a summerholidayjob at Madam Tussauds and they have a scene from Vermeer's the loveletter, which I always loved as a part of the tour that i used to do accompanying tourists and explaining as a guide, for a summer holiday. muchos saludos cordiales desde Amsterdam laura

    Hola Laura,

Laura
