You can use "on" or "upon".

Al llegar, los vi.
On arriving, I saw them.
Upon arriving, I saw them.
When I got there, I saw them. <= most common choice of all.

Was al + infinitive used in this sentence because the action of eating popcorn would be taking place as the movie was being watched?

I would have used "mientras ver", but not being a fluent speaker, I'm always open to learning something new. But, why does "al mirar" in this context sound strange to me? Am I being too literal in translation?

"mientras ves" would be better.

"Vez" is a time. "Ves" is the verb. :)

Correcto. Lo que es más, "mientras veo" would fit perfectly. :)

Es que la construcción gramatical está correcta, pero como que no se usa así, por lo menos en este caso.

Al ver would have been a better choice than al mirar (sorry about that!) and I
agree that mientras ves is a very good translation.

OK, so 'al+infinitive=upon'. So this sentence would more literally read something like "Do you like to eat popcorn upon (on) watching horror movies on Saturday night"? That's just how this sentence would be said and not the literal way I was trying to write it, correct?
