In Mexico, "¡Qué pena!" can be used as both "¡Qué lástima!" and "¡Qué vergüenza!" can mean "What a shame/pity" and "that's shameful/embarrassing".

- ¡Qué pena! (¡Qué lástima!) Las manzanas se pudrieron. -> What a pity. The apples rotted.
- ¡Qué pena! (¡Qué vergüenza!) Todos vieron cuando me caí. -> I'm embarrased. Everyone saw when I fell.
- ¡Qué pena! (¡Qué vergüenza!) El secretario anunció el aumento en los impuestos y tuvimos que aplaudirle. -> It's so shameful, the Secretary announced the rise in taxes and we had to applaud.
