A clash ensued

Does this sentence mean that the clash started or that it went on?

Thanks. :)

To ensue means to follow, from L. insequi, so the clash started, but following on (and caused by) something else.

There was a small collision between two cars. The drivers got out and started arguing, and a fight ensued. :)

So, seguir (from Latin sequi). You're not so far from having a Romance language. :D

Thanks. :)
