What is chiquito? and niñito means "Little Child".:)

I saw it written somewhere. I assumed it was chico+ito. And I thought that niñito meant toddler, not just any child who is little.

"Chiquito" means toddler and some small thing, it depends if it is used as a noun or as an adjective:

Mira ese chiquito qué bonito es.
Es muy chiquito este cochecito.

Adding to Irma's explanation, the latest fashion in Mexico is to call your love-partner "chiquito"/"chiquita" (like calling someone "baby", I think).

Everyone beat me in the answer, but only I want to comment something else refer to this thread.

The word Chiquito also is used when you are referring to someone with love I mean.

You can use that word when you are with your girlfriend or boyfriend for instance.

Hola chiquito amor.

I hope you can understand me.

Sincerely yours.

We Chileans have always used "chiquitita" for "chiquita", as a matter of fact I have never heard or used "chiquita" in Chile. Maybe now...

In the Caribbean I heard "Chiquitica" used as a nickname for a girl...

JPablo February 28, 2011 03:27 PM

Yes, I heard that version from people from the South of Spain as well.
