I'm not Mexican, but yes, "canasta" or "canasto" are the words to say "basket" in Spanish.

You sound startled by it. Any particular reason? are you thinking of something where it might sound weird to you?

I can't speak for sano23, of course. However, in the US "canasta" is also one of the names of a popular card game from the 1950's. According to wikipedia, the card game was invented in Montevideo in 1939, and was first introduced in the US around 1948.

Basket also means 'cesto'.
So we have basketball = balóncesto.
Also we can say 'cesta' for basket. But a cesta it's smaller than a cesto.

Canasta is a basket made with wicher, large rim and usually two handles.
