See if you can make the equivalence between:

Out, ouside, without

In, inside, within.

The entries for these words in the Diccionario Panhispanico de Dudas by the Real Academica EspaƱola (www.rae.es) may help. To summarize:

In general, "afuera" means "outside" in a generic sense. "Fuera" also means "outside", but it implies outside in relation to a specific place, which may be known already from context or which may be explicitly stated as the object of the preposition "de", as in "fuera de la oficina" = "outside the office".

"Adentro" resembles "afuera": it means "inside" in a generic sense. Likewise, "dentro" resembles "fuera", as it implies inside in relation to a specific place, which may be known already from context or which may be explicitly stated as the object of the preposition "de", as in "dentro de la casa" = "inside the house".

According to the DPD, some speakers in some areas, especially in the Americas, use "afuera de X" and "adentro de X" in colloquial or popular speech, but this usage is rejected as non-standard in more formal settings or contexts, where "fuera de X" and "dentro de X" should be used.
