Romper or rasgar means to tear in spanish?

Ive seen many spanish dictionaries say tear/rip in spanish is romper and rasgar, is their a preference in some countries? are they interchangeable in this case?

"romper" also means "to break".

tear in spanish?

tear in spanish is rasgar or romper?

Use rasgar.

Romper has more meanings than rasgar does, so they are not totally interchangeable. The only time I see them used interchangeably is when 'breaking' an object is done by tearing it (like paper).

Also rajar mean to tear.
