Combed his hair

JPablo August 18, 2011 04:31 PM

Combed his hair

combed his hair: gave someone a beating.

What would be a good equivalent expression in Spanish?

Le dio para el pelo ?
Le dio una paliza ?
Le dio una buena tunda ?

Any other ideas?

I didn't know that "comb his hair" meant "to beat someone"... But I'll trust you... :D

I've never heard "le doy para el pelo".

Le dió una paliza/tunda is commonly used. Either one.

:)

De acuerdo, la más neutral es "le dio una paliza/tunda". Las que se me ocurren son demasiado mexicanas o altisonantes. :D

I never heard combed his hair to mean give him a beating. I have heard:
to clock someone over the head, or to clock him one.
I have heard golpe en la cabeza.

I also have never heard "combed his hair" = to give someone a beating. Perhaps it's regional?

It's not from my neck of the woods, either.

Wow... I see.
I wonder if it is some kind of gangster metaphor, like when they play "violin" or something like that.
Thanks, anyhow.

On "dar para el pelo" Moliner says,
Dar para el pelo a alguien. 1 Dejarle malparado en una riña o discusión. 2 Dirigirle una reprensión muy violenta.

It might be the famous "denle nuestro/el tratamiento especial" that I've heard in dubbed TV.

Must be something like this: ;)

¡Ah!
¡Ahora todo cobra sentido pleno! :D
¡Gracias!

Never heard "Combed his hair" in that context in UK; what is widely used is "Wiped the floor with him!", but even that's not normally physical violence, rather a very emphatic verbal reprimand!
