That's 'to commission', in this sense.

I commissioned these paintings from the lady on the corner.

I ask the lady on the corner to take care of these panels

Side note for Spanish learners: "encargar(se)" is a very handy verb in Spanish... ;)

·Juan me encargó (la tarea de) cuidar la tienda.
Juan asked me / gave me the assignment to take care of the store.

·Mi hermana me encargó a su hijo.
My sister asked me to take care of her son.

·Tengo un negocio de marcos. Me encargaron enmarcar una fotografía.
I have a frame shop. We've been commissioned to frame a photograph.

·¿Ya encargaron las pizzas?
Have you already ordered the pizzas?

·José y Lucía llevan tres años de casados y todavía no encargan familia.
José and Lucía have been married for three years and they still don't have any children.

·Si vas a la tienda, ¿te encargo un café, por favor?
If you're going to the store, would you buy a coffee for me, please?

·Su papá les encargó que tuvieran cuidado si salían de noche.
Their dad advised them to be careful if they went out at night.

·Los paramédicos se encargaron de llevar al herido al hospital.
The paramedics were the ones who took the wounded man to the hospital.

·María se encargó de informarle a todo el mundo que es la nueva jefa.
María took good care that everyone would know she's the new boss.

·(An order from Al Capone) "Frank, encárgate de ese policía."
Frank, take care of that cop.

·El contador se encarga de pagar las facturas.
The accountant is in charge for paying the invoices.

·Vas a encargarte de abrirle la puerta a los invitados.
You'll have the job of / you'll be responsible for opening the door to the guests.
