Beautiful words

Do you have any favorite words? Words that sound beautiful to you in either English or Spanish? I love the word tangerine. I also like dragonfly and tambourine.

Traci, el nombre de me esposa. ¿Que Bonita? El nombre y la mujer.

I like using the verb opine instead of saying to state an opinion. I learned that it existed in English after learning it in Spanish. También me gusta la palabra chabacano se me hace much chistosa.

Me gustan murciélago, catorce, miércoles, y acurrucadito. Hay muchas palabras que endulzan la oreja.

I also like intrigue, whisper, snuggle, serendipity, and melancholy (as in pensive).

Nice words. Quizá te guste una de las de Iris, pero en español: libélula. También luciérnaga es similar a murciélago.

Rusty May 03, 2008 08:05 PM

Sí, a mí me gustan esas también. De las cuántas que hay, ¿cómo se pudiera elegir unas pocas?

Iris May 04, 2008 01:41 AM

I love serendipity and acurrucadito, Rusty.

sosia May 04, 2008 02:47 AM

I also love serendipity.
english:classic, spectacular
Spanish:aluvión, mariquita, reconfortar, morriña
german: Kleinod, funfhundertfunfundfünzig, Amtsschimmel
I have more, those are the first ones I remember.
saludos :D

Rusty May 04, 2008 07:26 AM

Sosia, I believe you meant fünfhundertfünfundzwanzig. What a mouthful!

Iris May 04, 2008 10:38 AM

Another word I like is ditto, because it makes me think of the film Ghost and the way it was used there...:)

Are you serious when you say you like those German words? They sound horrible to me!But I love mariquita and morriña(makes me think of Julio Iglesias...)

sosia May 04, 2008 02:05 PM

german words have nice sounds.
really it's fünfhundertfünfundfünzig (it's the number 555). It's like Frühstück (breakfast) words that make me like to say while eating a "Polvorón" :D
Kleinod it's like serendipity, a rescued old word, and means "little treasure"
Amtsschimmel ("moho de ministerio"/ministry's mold) means bureaucracy (papers waiting in a department)

Try to say "spectacular" in a loud voice. It's really SPECTACULAR.
saludos :D

Sosia, my apologies! I got derailed while looking for the missing umlauts.

Fünfhundertfünfundfünzig is a cool number.

sosia May 05, 2008 02:27 AM

derailed? sounds good :D
you can't say that in Spanish "me descarrilé mientras miraba las umlauts..."

to be/get derailed = desviarse - "me desvié mientras ..."

Y en castizo y poco delicado se puede decir : irse por los cerros de Ubeda, o salirse por peteneras.:)

Gracias, Iris. Aprendí más aquí y aquí.

When I was first learning German, I fell in love with how several words can be strung together. A classic is the "Danube steamship company/society/corp captain", rendered as Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän.

Elaina May 05, 2008 04:09 PM

Me gusta:

murmullo
susurro

whisper
whisp

Crazy, huh?

Elaina:rolleyes:
