What the difference between prevent and avoid?

avoid=evitar

prevent=impedir

I can avoid living somewhere that has earthquakes. But I cannot prevent earthquakes from occurring.

I'm avoiding you. :good:
I'm preventing you. :bad:
I'm preventing you from working. :good:
I'm avoiding you from working. :bad:

Do x to prevent colds and flu. :good:
Do y to avoid colds and flu. :good:

Don't avoid doing the dishes. :good:
Don't prevent doing the dishes. :bad:
Don't prevent your brother from doing the dishes. :good:
