It's OK, but you're using the passive voice. The passive voice is frequently used in English, but seldom used in Spanish.
It would be a lot easier to translate, and won't sound as awkward to native speakers, if you changed the sentence to the active voice:
"In 1998, the San Diego Charges chose him."

Despite of what Rusty says, it is correct and OK to say "en 1998 fue escogido por los San Diego Chargers.

Para mí es correcto "en 1998 él era escogido por los San Diego Chargers" También lo es
"En 1998 fue escogido por los San Diego Chargers" y por supuesto "En 1998, los San Diego chargers lo escogieron".

Y también "en 1998, se le escogió por los SanDiego Chargers para..." :)
