Significa: creer la historia, aceptar lo que se vende y comprar el producto. Figurativamente significa traga la carnada.
Quirero saber si en español se usa traga la carnada como un dicho con el
mismo sentido.
Un otro semejante a swallow the bait es drink the Kool-aid.

He "bit the hook" is another way we say "he swallowed the bait" That's saying that really translates.

I think the kool-aid is a reference to Jim Jones and the Jonestown suicide/murders in the 1970's when 900 followers drank poisoned kool-aid and died.

I just wanted to note that in the Americas these would be more common in the simple past:

Se lo tragó.
Se lo creyó.
Mordió el anzuelo.
