In twenty twenty or in two thousand and twenty or both?

JPablo November 20, 2012 03:50 PM

I believe both are valid... (Probably the second one more common?)

I like twenty twenty myself. In fact, rightly or wrongly I've been on a quixotic sort of crusade on this very point ever since the year 2000 (twenty hundred, since 1900 was called nineteen hundred). Back in 1920 they didn't say one thousand nine hundred twenty, did they? Maybe they did, but all I've ever heard it called is nineteen twenty.

You'll hear both 'two thousand twenty' and 'twenty twenty' used in the U.S. Using 'twenty' to name the century instead of 'two thousand' is more popular, after 2010. Prior to that, from 2000 - 2009, 'two thousand' was preferred.

Outside of the U.S., they like to insert 'and' in between 'two thousand' and 'twenty'.

When referring to a year, the best way to say it is twenty twenty. When referring to an number you say two thousand twenty or two thousand and twenty. Example: The community has two thousand twenty residents (never twenty twenty residents)

On the "two thousand and twenty" I would drop the "and". Sounds more natural to me. :twocents:

2020 has different recitations depending on what it references.

As the name of a year I prefer and generally say "twenty twenty".

As a 4-digit block group within a phone number it's any one of 3 possibilities: "twenty twenty", "two oh two oh", or "two zero two zero".

As a quantity, count, or sum of money written on a check/cheque, it's either "two thousand twenty" or "two thousand and twenty". Personally, when I write a check/cheque I write $2020.20 as "two thousand twenty and 20/100 dollars" and I write $2020.00 as "two thousand twenty and no/100 dollars".
