Negarse

Negarse

A fairly obvious question really. This newspaper headline:

Quote:

Me niego a que entidades rescatadas ni me contesten
Should that be translated as

I refuse to accept that ... don't even answer me.

(entidades rescatadas refers to banks which have needed public funds)

My dictionary gives to refuse for negarse in which case we need another infinitive in English, which seems odd. Thanks.

I don't accept....?

They kind of forced the language to make it fit into a headline.

What "I" refuse is not that they don't even answer "me", but to accept the fact that they don't.

The full statement by José Manuel Bermúdez makes much more sense:

Quote:

[...] nos negamos a aceptar que entidades bancarias que han sido rescatadas con el dinero de todos los ciudadanos ni siquiera se dignen a contestar a la Administración

Thanks - I didn't notice there was an improved version in the article. I think I shall have to ignore headlines in future and just read the articles. :rose:

Don't worry. Editors are usually lazy to make sense of a summary. ;)
