Can I say, informally, nomás in place of nada más for as soon as?

Yes, although "nada más" + infinitive is a more educated expression (at least in Mexico), so it sounds kind of strange with "nomás". Not wrong at all, but unusual. :)
With the same sense as the original example, it's more often heard with a conjugated verb:

- Nomás llegó, todos salieron a verlo.
- Nomás terminó el discurso, salió corriendo.
- Nomás salió del gobierno, se hizo católico.
