I got a text saying See you next year as Hasta el próximo a... ciclo solar. I can only imagine he couldn't manage the ñ of año and wanted to avoid confusion with the other word, but can ciclo solar be a good substitute for year?

Hmm. Un ciclo solar is a span of around 11 years.
That's the astronomy term, anyway.

Good to know. I might just try it anyway, to see if anyone else knows that. I sure didn't!

They're just being funny. They're taking "ciclo solar" loosely, as just the time the earth takes to turn around the sun. That's a sort of cycle. :)
