Puede que sea menos despreciable
Hola a todos,
In one scene in the movie Carne de horca, Juan Pablo comes to see his fiancée, whom he has not seen for a long time. The last time they saw each other, they did not part well. Juan Pablo: Puede que sea menos despreciable de lo que había llegado a pensar. Consuelo: ¿Qué has hecho, Juan Pablo? Juan Pablo: Una locura. Pero no me preguntes. ¿Dónde está don Joaquín? Well, I must say I fail to understand what he means by "Puede que sea menos despreciable" (not sure what despreciable implies in this context and what it refers to). Probably he refers to the scene where they didn't part well (at 18.59), but even in this case I'm still not sure what he means. My best guess is: You met/received me better than I thought you would (You're happy to see me, and I thought you wouldn't be). https://my.mail.ru/ok/571130741592/video/10/413.html The scene in question starts at 1:00:52. Thank you. |
Despreciable means contemptible in that scene. Out of context, I can't be sure, I think Juan Pablo feels he's not so despicable as he has thought about himself. I'd rewrite the sentence in Spanish this way: "Parece que no he caído tan bajo como lo había imaginado" (I would prefer "parece que no había caído tan bajo como había/hubiera/hube imaginado". I choose "hubiera", but I don't want to complicate the matter for you)

Alec's interpretation is right.
Juan Pablo, for once, is doing something to help someone else than himself, which is the reason why she and her father cancelled the wedding. |
