Earphones / Hearing Aid
In a conversation, I used the word auriculares to refer to earphones/earbuds. Later in the conversation, the person I was speaking with used the word audífonos, which is the word I use to refer to a hearing aid.
So what word is usually used for earphones/earbuds in Mexico? What word is used for a hearing aid in Mexico? |
Headphones: auriculares/audífonos/cascos
Earphones/earbuds: auriculares/audífonos Hearing aid(s): audífono(s) |
I'd add
hearing aids = main: audífonos; secondary: auriculares All the rest = the other way around The less visible they are, the more audífonos they're called. |
Usual vocabulary in Mexico:
Earphones, headphones, earbuds = audífonos Hearing aids = "audífonos" (or even "audífonos para sordera", which might feel uncomfortable for the user, so just "audífonos" would be better). Also, "auxiliares auditivos" (more neutral and clearer, and the term used by doctors). "Auricular" is mostly used for devices where you can hear and speak at the same time, like a headset, a handsfree (which is also a "manos libres"), or even the old telephone horns (which are also "bocinas"). |
