Going to a party

I want to say

My friends and I are going to a party to watch the super bowl.

I believe el is used in Mexico and la is used in Spain.

So is there any time that por is used to mean in order to ? or is it just para

Rusty February 01, 2009 05:11 PM

Of those two, only para can be used to denote in order to.

EDIT: Here's a nice site that shows the differences between por and para.

ok, thank you. con el fin de ver literally translates to with the purpose of watching, right? and would it be okay to use this conversationally? because in english it sounds wordy, but I know in spanish it might sound different.

Rusty February 01, 2009 05:18 PM

Para ver is more popular, for the very reason you gave, but I wanted to give you the option of explaining the purpose of the party with other wording.

CrOtALiTo February 01, 2009 05:35 PM

I will correct you.

This was my correction above, I feel that the word Para is more appropriate than el or la.

thank you both :) :).

CrOtALiTo February 01, 2009 11:46 PM

You're welcome.

Saludos :D
