Sight words

Sight words

Good morning, I usually have to translate report cards and many times the teachers write "He needs to practice his sight words." What would be a good translation?

sight words = words that are recognized by sight instead of by sounding them out

Here are some of the translations I've seen on the Internet:
palabras reconocibles a simple vista
palabras reconocibles a la vista
palabras reconocibles a primera vista
vocabulario reconocible ...
vocabulario/palabras que se identifica ...
vocabulario memorizado

Some I found that I don't think capture el sentido:
palabras claves
palabras de vista
palabras frecuentes

I think it is another way to say that he/she needs to read more? :D

Thank you for the plethora of translations (did I say that right? - just learned plethora!) Rusty, I like "palabras claves" the best :)

You're right Chileno, that translates into "You need to read more!! You're behind, study!" LOL

Yep, plethora is correct. It has a nice ring to it, don't you think? We stole it from the Greeks.

I'd use:

He needs to practice his sight words.
Necesita practicar su lectura, para poder reconocer palabras a simple vista sin necesidad de pronunciarlas sílaba por sílaba.

I know that's a long translation, but that's pretty much the only way to translate the meaning of the sentence in English.

I agree with David's translation.
