Advertir

This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for April 26, 2009

advertir (verb) — to warn, caution, advise, admonish, tip off, inform. Look up advertir in the dictionary

Quédate aquí en la entrada y me adviertes si regresa ese hombre.
Stay here at the door and let me know if that man comes back.

It also means to notice as in the examples below:
Darse cuenta de una cosa: nada más llegar, advirtieron que no eran bien recibidos.
Observar, percibir: en la imagen de la fotografía advertimos una gran variedad de efectos cromáticos.

Because English have a lot of words which come from Latin.:)

yes that's true but...I still don't really understand

It's a false friend, Jessica. Meanings and usage in both languages are not actually related. :)

Ok. Irmamar said that both "advertir" and "advertise" come from Latin.
One of the definitions in the RAE for advertir is "Llamar la atención de alguien sobre algo, hacer notar u observar" i.e. to make someone notice something, which is precisely what advertisers do.:)
