This is a discussion thread for the Daily Spanish Word for April 26, 2009
advertir (verb) — to warn, caution, advise, admonish, tip off, inform. Look up advertir in the dictionary Quédate aquí en la entrada y me adviertes si regresa ese hombre. Stay here at the door and let me know if that man comes back.

Ok. Irmamar said that both "advertir" and "advertise" come from Latin.
One of the definitions in the RAE for advertir is "Llamar la atención de alguien sobre algo, hacer notar u observar" i.e. to make someone notice something, which is precisely what advertisers do. ![]()
