What is the difference in meaning between entonces and pues? When is one used versus the other?:thinking:

Sometimes "pues" and "entonces" are used indiscriminately.

Con este brindis, pues, termino mi discurso.
Con este brindis, entonces, termino mi discurso.

Other times, we use "pues" in an answer:

¿Fuiste allí? Pues no fui
In this case, "entonces" is not possible.

We use "entonces" when we are relating some events that have happened one after another:

El herido se levantó del suelo, entonces se puso a chillar como un loco.

"Pues" in sentences about "time" is not used, we use "entonces".

"Pues" is also used as a "pet word" (I mean a "muletilla"):

Anda, vamos, pues.
¿Qué piensas hacer, pues?

En el caso del que está en rojo también se puede usar entonces en vez de pues. :)

Not the only difference, but something that might help: "entonces" is often used as "so", and "pues" is often used as "well".

--So, what do you think about the new house?
(Entonces, ¿qué piensas de la nueva casa?)

--Pues no sé... pienso que es muy chica.
(Well, I don't know... I think it's too small.)
