Atarraya

¡Hola Amigos!
This is my first post. Does anyone know the meaning of "atarraya"? It is from the lyrics to the song "El Pescador" from Colombia.
¡Gracias!
Sue

An atarraya (also esparavel) is a round net used for fishing.1 The term can also refer to the method of fishing with a small round net.2 [Image source]

To my knowledge this is not a word. Atalaya is a word meaning watch tower.
Many songs have their lyrics (letra in Spanish) on the internet. There, you may be able to find the word in question, and it may be spelled very differntly from the way you heard it.

Great minds think alike. The first thing I thought of was atalaya, but after some research, it looks like atarraya is also a word.

I agree. I didn't know this word, but I've looked it up at a dictionary and it exists. This is a net, as you said. I also thought it was "atalaya" at first.

You're image brought back some memories Tomisimo. When my grandfather passed, one of the things I ended up with was a net just like the one in your picture. He lived in Florida, and used it to throw into bait fish schools, to catch, well, bait fish.

Not a lot of situations where I needed it up here in Ohio, but used it out in my parents pond a couple of times. It takes some skill to throw those things.
