Querella

Is this term used for lawsuit?

María José August 17, 2009 07:15 AM

I did think so, but the dictionary says 'private prosecution'. Is that different?
It can also mean dispute.

Thanks María. I always thought it meant fight or quarrel, but now I see that there us a fine difference. There's something more formal about the word querella.

Querella o pleito, en sentido judicial, es una demanda en contra de una persona, grupo de personas o una institución, para que un juez decida quién tiene la razón cuando se pelea por propiedades, títulos, obligaciones, etc.

Also there's another way in the term judicial.

Litigar.
Here the lawyers use that word in the ambit judicial.

here it's very common, for people who are always in the media, to insult each other and saying "te voy a poner una querella" (I'm going to put a prosecution in the court)

Saludos :D

People sometimes use it to mean a fight or dispute outside court, but it is wrong to use it like that.

pelea = rencilla :)

Therefore, it's took as an Litigamiento.
