A Little Phrase

A Little Phrase

I need help translating this phrase from 'La Fiesta de San Fermin' by Carmen Roman.

Aparentemente, esta tradicion nacio debido a la falta de camiones para llevar los animales hasta el lugar donde se efecturia la corrida; luego la gente empezo a jugarse la suerte para probar su valor.

So far I got:
Apparently, this tradition had been born due to the lack of trucks in order (?)
to take the animals upto a place where they could carry out the bullfight, then the people started to risk the luck in order to show it's value (?).

I'm really confused with that last line, can someone help me translate?

fermines

"...jugarse la suerte para probar su valor." translates to: "...try their luck
to prove their bravery."

thank you very much sir. I don't see how that relates to moving the animals upto a place where they could carry out the bull fight. Unless I translated the previous part wrong...

My suggestion:

Seemingly, this tradition was born due to the lack of trucks to transport the animals to the place where the bullfight would be held; then people started to tempt their luck to show their courage.

It's talking about the tradition of making the bulls run through the streets - there wasn't mechanical transport, so they fenced off the side-streets and drove the bulls along the streets. Then people started running in front of them to show off.
