Ser parco en palabras

Can we say to be short of words ? if not, how can we say that?

Perikles October 09, 2009 10:21 AM

= laconic (Spartans, in Laconia, were famous for their brevity of speech)

ROBINDESBOIS October 09, 2009 11:23 AM

So, you say, I´m very laconic ? In spanish we say " ser laconico"
IS there a saying with words ?

poli October 09, 2009 11:26 AM

You can say laconic, only people with good vocabularies will understand you.
The common saying is: the cat's got you tongue.

ROBINDESBOIS October 09, 2009 11:49 AM

Yes but that is different. I mean when you don´t know what to say, because you lack words.

Entonces si estás agobiado y sin palabras se puede decir:
to be left speechless.

also often heard: "words fail me.".

Pero una persona puede ser "parco en palabras" siempre. Un hermano mío es parco en palabras, "le tienes que sacar las palabras con pinzas" (otra expresión :))

irmamar October 09, 2009 12:37 PM

I've looked it up: to be sparing with words :)

ROBINDESBOIS October 09, 2009 12:56 PM

Eso es ser parco en palabras. Porque pensaba yo que podría usar short of ....

poli October 09, 2009 01:15 PM

short of words
a person a few words
taciturn
laconic
quiet
all these usually describe if you are quiet by nature

If you are temporarily quiet, then the saying is : the cat's got your tongue
keeping mum

ROBINDESBOIS October 09, 2009 01:45 PM

So you can say I´m short of words, after all.

Tomisimo October 09, 2009 01:55 PM

Ser parco en palabras
To be a person of few words
To not be very talkative
To be quiet
To be reserved

I think so, but it doesn't sound very natural to me personally.

AngelicaDeAlquezar October 09, 2009 03:04 PM

I've heard "to be short of words" when one has an incapability to communicate with words what they want.

I'm short of words to tell you how scared I was.

It was so beautiful, that I'm short of words to describe what it was like.

"Ser parco" is rather voluntary.

ROBINDESBOIS October 09, 2009 03:23 PM

Si pues más o menos eso. Gracias a todos.
