Sorteo

Hacer un sorteo
How can we say in English Hacer un sorteo in the following context.

I have heard raffle or lottery.

pjt33 October 14, 2009 05:44 AM

Si se trata del orden (para saber quien sale primero a cantar) dices cómo se hace: "to pull names out of a hat", "to draw straws", etc.

We'll pull names out of a hat to decide who sings first.
The flats were allocated by random draw.

In the dictionary they say to make a draw is that correct?
ANd to draw lots for....

Just somedays ago I made a little raffle in my house with my parents and my brothers, the that I raffled in my house was a Ipod and well my father wons.

Perdona me, no hablo mucho español.

Just the other day, I had a raffle in my house with my parents and my brothers. I raffled an iPod and my father won.

Is make a draw correct ?

pjt33 October 14, 2009 04:10 PM

Me suena raro.

by drawing lots we will know the name of the first singer

We will choose/select/determine/pick the first singer by drawing lots.

("Determine" y "select" me parecen bastante formales; "pick" es bastante informal).

mucho mejor

ROBINDESBOIS October 16, 2009 12:18 AM

What about:

We will make a draw to choose the first singer.

pjt33 October 16, 2009 12:57 AM

Ya he dicho que "Make a draw" me suena raro. "Hold a draw" sería correcto, pero "to draw" me parece más natural.

ROBINDESBOIS October 16, 2009 05:34 PM
