Ajuste de cuentas

How can we translate "ajuste de cuentas" en la siguiente frase, I know that one translation could be vendetta, but i don´t know if it fits well here.

I try it:
Two dead people have appeared with a shot in the nape, it seems like a vendetta is the cause, since both of them had a criminal record and were ........

HELP ME PLEASE !

Two bodies have been discovered with gunshot wounds in the neck. It appears to be a settling of accounts because both had had previous convictions and were involved in criminal activities. ('shady business' - too informal)

Not 100% sure on this one but maybe 'even the score' or 'settle the score' could also be an option? (Maybe better to comment on by a native speaker. :))
