Music: Brass Instruments??
I play the French horn. I was explaining to a Spanish speaking friend that most brass players really enjoy "jam sessions". I wanted to figure out how to say "brass instrument" in Spanish. When I type it into the translator (I tried both translators here and with Google Translate), I get the following:
(English) The French horn is a brass instrument. (Spanish) El corno francés es un instrumento de viento. Well, I understand that the French horn is a wind instrument, but so are clarinets and flutes. Here's what I get when I try woodwind instruments: (English) The clarinet is a woodwind instrument. (Spanish) El clarinete es un instrumento de viento. Same thing. I understand that "viento" means "wind". But I would assume that there must be a distinction used by musicians in Spanish speaking countries between brass and woodwind instruments. I have tried playing with different combinations of the words "brass" and "woodwind" and the best I can come up with is "latón" for brass and "de viento-madera" for woodwind. So would brass instruments be "instrumentos de latones" and woodwinds "instrumentos de viento-maderas"? Is there a native Spanish speaker out there who has played music with an orchestra (or band) in a Spanish-speaking context who can help me with these terminologies? Thanks!! |
¿Eres trompista? ¡Enhorabuena!
The brass instruments are classified as instrumentos de viento, and subclassified as los metales, whereas the woodwinds are subclassified as las maderas. El corno francés es un instrumento de viento-metal. La flauta es un instrumento de viento-madera. (the hyphen can be, and often is omitted) |
¡Sí! ¡Bueno! ¿Y tú también? ¿Eres músico?
Gracias por las frases músicas. Es muy útil! Entonces, si se sopla en el, se llama "instrumentos de viento" en oposición a "instrumentos de cuerdas". Trompeta contra violín. ¿Sí? Y, dentro de los instrumentos de viento son los metales y las maderas. Unos de los músicos en mi orquesta hablan español. Siempre trato a hablar con ellos en español, y es muy útil a hablar en español sobre las cosas músicas. Es menos amaestrado. (Trying to say that it is "less contrived".....) GRACIAS!!! |
