Muertos

Muertos

How could I translate into English "los muertos" used as a noun? For instance:

Hace autopsias a los muertos.

The dead? Dead people?

Thanks.

Perikles January 20, 2010 05:17 AM

The dead. :)

irmamar January 20, 2010 05:19 AM

¡Qué rápido! :D

My teacher says "dead people" or "dead corpses", but I wanted to say if "the dead" were correct.

Thanks. :)

I can always think of ways of saying 'dead people' (e.g. Dead people tell no lies), but dead corpses is definitely wrong. :)

That's right dead corpse is redundant. like cadáver muerto.

You can say living corpse however. This oxymoron is used to describe perhaps insensitively someone about to die.

"The deceased" is another option (although perhaps more commonly heard referring to a single person/body).

Oh, no-one mentioned "the bodies" either.

People death.

Autopsy of the people death.

Well, the sentence is something like a joke, since all autopsies are performed on the dead.

Could I say simply "corpse"?

poli January 20, 2010 11:43 AM

corpse = cadáver

Cadaver is also an English word meaning corpse.

CrOtALiTo January 20, 2010 11:45 AM

Word ugly.

Corpse

I meant in the sentence: to perform an autopsy on a corpse.

Si un avión chocara contra una montaña en los Pirineos cerca de la frontera y rebotara hasta acabar con una mitad en España y una en Francia, ¿dónde enterrarían los supervivientes?

:D

irmamar January 20, 2010 01:16 PM

Donde nadie los encontrara.

(no quiero ir a la cárcel)

The dead, dead people, o solo corpses (dead corpses me parece redundante;)) son un poco impersonal. Sin embargo esas traducciones son más literales, también podrías decirlo así

The fallen

AngelicaDeAlquezar January 21, 2010 09:49 AM

@Irma: :lol: Me doy cuenta.
