Ser/Estar vivo

laepelba February 06, 2010 06:22 PM

Ser/Estar vivo

Estar vivo = to be alive
Ser vivo = to be sharp
Correct?

So, does "sharp" mean "smart"? Or does it literally mean sharp like a knife?

chileno February 06, 2010 06:40 PM

Smart.

You are getting good at this. :-)

AngelicaDeAlquezar February 06, 2010 08:20 PM

I agree. It's "smart". :)

"Ser vivo" = "living being", too. :D

What, like a noun phrase? Will you please use that in a sentence? Thanks!

How could you treat an animal like that? It is a living being after all. :)

You made me laugh so hard I choked!!:lol::lol:

Please allow me to clarify. Irmamar, would you mind giving me an example of "ser vivo" used in a SPANISH sentence where it means "living being"? Thank you VERY much!!

This is what happens when you start languages. :)

:lol::lol: Well, you could have saved me the trouble by being more specific.:lol::lol:

irmamar February 07, 2010 11:59 AM

Perikles is right. :)

¿Cómo puedes tratar así a un animal? Al fin y al cabo, es un ser vivo. :)

I said that because it was the first thing that came to my mind when I read "ser vivo". ;)

A human being - un ser humano.
A living being - un ser vivo.
:)

FABULOUS example, thanks, Irmamar!! :D

But it's not mine, it was Perikles' example (I translated it into Spanish). :)

Yeah, but I was attempting to overlook the silliness of his response. :)

Hey - watch it - how did I know which language you wanted?:D

laepelba February 07, 2010 12:47 PM

I apparently wasn't specific enough. You're like my students who love to argue semantics rather than learn math. :D

I doubt it was "hatred" ... but a frustrated appreciation for your ability to notice semantic details and for being literal. The best mathematicians often are so....

How true. My brother, also a mathematician, was once filling in an application form for something, and the first question was male or female?. He replied Yes.

I've heard that joke a bit differently. Instead of asking "gender", some forms ask "sex", and the inevitable answer is yes. :applause:
