Looking on the internet, I see that the expression has since been hijacked by causes other than that of alcohol, but (at least in BrE) it still has that connotation.

¿En EEUU dirías "take the pledge" (sin nada más) para la promesa de lealtad al estado[1]?

[1] No sé cómo traducir "pledge of allegiance".

Generalmente se traduce como "juramento a la bandera" lo cual indica compromiso con el estado.
