What is a "soccorista"?

Hey guys,
I heard the term "soccorista" being used in school by my teachers for a "paramedic" but I thought the term was "paramedico" for a paramedic. Anyone care to clarify this?

The word is "socorrista" if that is any help.

@wafflestomp: Chileno is right, the right spelling is "socorrista", and that's a rescue worker. :)

It's also the name used (here in Tenerife) for a lifeguard on a beach or large swimming pool. (One who is trained in giving medical help)

It's like a paramedic.

Regards.

In Spain, a socorrista is also a lifeguard. :)
