Jessica, sí, pero no creo que eso sea lo que pregunta Robin.

Is it your first time in Paris? :good:
Is it the first time you go to Paris? or you come to Paris ? :bad:
Is it the first time you have gone/come to Paris? :good:
The first time I went to Paris, ... :good:

The present simple is not possible I see, what about in American English? Do they follow the same rule, present perfect instead of the Present? or do they use the simple past like in other cases?

If you've just arrived in Paris:
Is this your first time in Paris?

If you're about to leave for Paris:
Is this the first time you're going to Paris?

If you've been in Paris for awhile:
Is this the first time you've been to Paris. (focus is on the stay)
Is this the first time you've come to Paris. (focus is on the trip)

When you're back home and talking about your first time in Paris:
The first time I was in Paris. (focus is on the stay)
The first time I went to Paris. (focus is on the trip)

Unlike Rusty, I would also use "Is this the first time you've been to Paris?" with someone who hasn't left yet.

It's the first time that I'm in Paris.

Why?

I suppose you would use it with somebody you know will go to Paris. Right?

Rusty April 21, 2010 09:05 PM

We would also say, "Is this the first time you've been to Paris?"
Is this the first time you're going to Paris?

Las dos me dan igual.
