Pleased to meet you
 

Hi, was wondering if anyone could help me with this, please bare in mind I am just starting to learn spanish!

I had previously learnt that pleased to meet you was mucho gusto but I have now come across encantado and encantada which apparently also mean pleased to meet you. As I understand it encantado is for when meeting a male and encantada for female but is there any difference between mucho gusto and these two words or can you use either when meeting someone?

Hope that makes sense and any help will be much appreciated.

Literally "encantado" means "very happy" delighted;
encantado CON algo:
quedaron encantados con tu trabajo = they were delighted o very pleased with your work;
b (courtesy formula):
le presento al Señor Ruiz — encantado [de conocerle]
let me introduce you to Mr Ruiz — how do you do [or] pleased to meet you;

I you are a man, you always say "encantado". If a woman is talking, she says, "encantada".

"Mucho gusto" is literally "A lot of pleasure" equivalent in English to "My pleasure" as in "pleased to meet you".

So because I am a man I would always say encantado instead of encantada it doesn't matter if I was saying it to a male or female?

You meet Angelina Jolie "estoy encantado de conocerla Sra Jolie", shortly "Encantado, Sra Jolie"
You meet Brad Pitt "estoy encantado de conocerle Sr Pitt" shortly "Encantado, Sr Pitt"

There's a lot of ways to say nice to meet you... there's mucho gusto, encantado/a de conocerlo/la/le/te and there's also "Gusto en conocerte/le/lo/la

Also "un placer (de/en) conocerle/lo/la"

I have used before, It was a placer meeting you.
I didn't know that phrase ( Pleased to meet you was)

I've to learnt before that I should to write Pleased to meet you.

In English we just say "Nice to meet you" in almost all situations, no matter how formal. If you're trying to be VERY formal meeting like the President or someone like that ( :D ) I would reserve "pleased to meet you" for then.

Also "good to meet you" works, though I don't think "pleased to meet you" is as rare as wafflestomp makes it seem. Picture using it upon meeting your new girlfriend/boyfriend's parents for the first time, as opposed to the president. Perhaps your new boss, a respected elder, etc.

At least around here it isn't. Nice to meet you would be fine for all of those situations you said.
