Is this a term for a makeshift hospital?

Like a military "field hospital"?

Un hospital de campaña es una amplia unidad médica móvil que atiende de manera provisoria a los heridos en el lugar, antes de que se pueda transportarlos con seguridad a las instalaciones de un hospital fijo. Los hospitales de campaña pueden estar a eso de dos millas atrás de la primera línea de soldados.

A field hospital is a large mobile medical unit that temporarily takes care of casualties on-site before they can be safely transported to more permanent hospital facilities. The concept was inherited from the battlefield (such as the MASH = Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) :)

And there I was thinking it was a hospital with bells on it. Ah well. :(:o

Edit: my etymological dictionary claims that campaña also derives from Campania (1st C. B.C.) the plain near Naples. How about that?

More interesting yet... I realize that most likely both words end up coming more or less from the same origin, but evolving through different vias.

Most likely the "Campania" as the region, near Naples, gets its name from the other one meaning 'country' or 'plain'. (I am just guessing here.)

The derivation I gave before (from Moliner) is also in the abridged by Corominas.

Joan Corominas gives for 'campana' (bell) "abreviación de VASA CAMPANA 'recipientes de Campania', región de la cual procedía el bronce de mejor calidad".
He also gives "campo/campamento/campaña [...] campesino as coming from 'CAMPUS' (llanura - plain)

Tienda de campaña is a tent is that correct? I remember just hearing that the other day... "¡No acampes en esta tienda de campaña porque hay muchos osos cerca de aqui!"

I think it has to do with the fact that "hospital de campaña" is used more in a military context.
