LLevar

Hi folks,

Just wondering if the verb llevar has the meaning "to wear", is a meaning only used in Spain. A friend of mine who speaks Spanish, from the Domican Republic, was not aware of that meaning of llevar. She was only familliar with the meaning to carry. I thought even Latin America and Mexico was familiar with the meaning to wear as llevar.

Otherwise how would one usually say for example, I wear my jacket every weekend.

"me pongo mi cazadora todos los fines de semana"
"llevo mi cazadora todos los fines de semana"
I'm from Spain, I use both :D

As far as Mexico is concerned, I think the most common ways of saying this would be:

I wear my jacket every weekend
Uso mi chamarra todos los fines de semana.
Me pongo mi chamarra todos los fines de semana.

And this is less common, and you need to say "Llevo puesto":

Llevo puesto mi chamarra todos los fines de semana.

BTW, chamarra is a very common way to say jacket in Mexico. I had never heard of "cazadora" before now (except a woman hunter). I'm assuming it's word that's used in Spain. :)

Llevar certainly is used to mean 'to wear' in Central America, along with several other meanings. Have a look at the other meanings listed in Tomísimo's dictionary.

Hola!

Yo hé escuchado que dicen:

-Llevo puesto un vestido negro.

-El individuo lleva puesto una chamarra y gorra azul.

Pero cuando se usa en esta forma, siempre lleva la palabra (puesto o puesta)...... i.e. lleva puesto
de otra manera no estaría muy claro........
i.e. Llevo un vestido negro.
lo llevo para donde?

El individuo lleva una chamarra y gorra azul.
los lleva cargando?
los lleva a la basura?

Bueno, quizá esté yo en un error.

Sosia, CAZADORA???? Nunca habia escuchado esa palabra como "jacket".

Elaina;)
