Woodcock
woodcock = becada f, chocha f
Moliner gives, chocha (de or. expresivo; Scolopax rusticola) f. Ave zancuda algo menor que una perdiz, muy estimada por su carne. Es muy común en España, sobre todo en sitios sombríos. Arcea, becada, chochaperdiz, chorcha, coalla, gallineta, picarúa, pitorra. (En Colombia = Chilacoa.) I was not familiar with these two names for this bird. Not the English "woodcock" nor the Spanish"becada" or "chocha". My question here is... what is the most common name for this bird in Latin America (and particularly Mexico)? :?: |

I've never known that there are woodcocks in Mexico. :thinking:
I've seen the names "arcea" and "chocha" for that animal in books... not that it is a "common name" of course. :D |
@ Perikles. Thank you for the input.
The answer to your question is, because we live in a Global Hamlet... (you know, Marshall McLuhan...) I understand there are no woodcocks in Mexico, but by the same token... we don't have many penguins in Spain (that I know of...) yet we have a name for that bird. We normally call it "pingüino" but also "pájaro bobo" and "pájaro niño". Isn't that bird? I mean, "weird"? :rolleyes: :) @ Angélica, for that matter I myself had no clue they were in Spain... But at least if I use the word "chocha" people can check it in the dictionary... Probably my question was more on the lines of "is this a know bird"? I've now checked Wikipedia and got more acquainted with the bird under question... At any rate, thank you for the input! :) |

Anyway, we have the largest collection of penguins outside of Antarctica here in Tenerife :lengua::lengua: |
Wow! I see, live and learn! :lol: :lol: :lol:
¡Pingüinos en Tenerife! ¡Pingüinos en Tenerife! ¡Pingüinos en Tenerife! ¡¿Quién lo iba a decir?! (¿Tienen una buena aclimatación con AC y otros lujos necesarios?) (For a moment I thought you were referring to these politicians dressed with tail coats... not the actual bird!) |
