"Dear your dreams"
Today I've seen: "Dear your dreams" Is this correct?
If it is, I think the translation would be: "Quiere [a] tus sueños" Is "dear" a verb? I've never seen it that way... is it common? I believe I'm missing something here. Thank you |
What was the context?
|
The only possible thing I can think of is 'endear your dreams', but even that wouldn't be a common thing to say.
'Dear' isn't a verb. I have to side with Lou Ann, we'll need more context. |
If it's from a poem or another context which permits unusual word order it could mean "Caros [son] tus sueños".
|
If it's a fragment and you add a comma, it could work:
Dear, your dreams are.... |
I would tend to think a context like this, (I googled this, it's not that I am such a "smart Alec"... although sometimes I wonder...)
Hold dear your dreams. Never regret, Never forget. Love every moment for what it is. Look past the truth, Teach what you can, Learn what you cannot. Ookami, what is your take? (Or am I going completely off field here?) This would be something like, "Valora tus sueños/Ten tus sueños en alta estima" Something on that line? Well, let us know! :) More examples, In life, you must hold dear your dreams and aspirations – they are what make every minute worth living and encourage us... When all of life's dreams appear to fail hold dear your dreams even closer. Rise, my dear, your dreams await you... in this valley of sorrow if I cannot be with you to wipe away all your tears, Oh dear... your dreams are all up in smoke! |
I can give my humble opinion.
I could say Love your dreams. Your dreams are the maximum in the moment. Dear could be interpreted as Querido and it could sound and incorrect for the own phrase. You can use Love instead of Dear. Sincerely yours. |
I understand, Crotalito, but if you track with the previous answers you see "dear" is not a "verb". Rusty gives "endear" (as a verb) but it is not that common either (as he says).
I agree with you that "love your dreams" makes sense, but the question Ookami is raising is about "dear"... At any rate, you remind me (actually Pjt33 did when he used the word "caro" for "dear") one German poem by Goethe, whose translation reads, Gris, caro amigo, es toda teoría... verde el árbol dorado de la vida. (Goethe) In English would be something like, Grey, my dear friend, is all the theory, green is the golden tree of life. (My German is nowhere to be found, but the original by Goethe, is obviously, lieber Freund, in German.) Oh, but I found it, "Grau, lieber Freund, ist alle Theorie, und grün des Lebens goldner Baum" (Sounds nice!) :) |
We're all speculating here, but haven't yet heard back from Ookami. :) Maybe the context is something outrageously different than what we've all imagined....
|
You're right Lou, here we are in the middle of the night, without being able to sleep (and have some "dear dreams") waiting and waiting for Ookami to say "hello"! (Just kidding!) :)
|
I was wondering why you're posting in the middle of the night ... it must be like 4:30am in CA.....
|
Oh, I am having an extended night shift... so I just checked all the new threads... (Precisely 4:34 a.m.)
|
Ugh! I would never be able to work the night shift! I hope that at least you are home and sleeping by the time I am checking this much later....
|
Well, you're going to kill me :)
I asked the person who wrote that... and he made a mistake, it was Dare your dreams Thanks for the replies though, it was a good exercise! |

No kidding!!!
That's what I call, not a "rare" mis...steak, [pink] but rather a very well done!! [almost burned!] It was an interesting exercise, though! (That's why when you try to decipher some Sumerian/cuneiform language you have so much trouble... you may have to overcome these type of things... which happened 4,000 years ago...) |
Well now I feel silly because I was going to say "Dare to dream" which would sound good, and it is a TV show. Precisely the reason I know what soñar means... :D Or the reason I remember it anyway. But I didn't post it because I felt like I would sound stupid lol!
|
Well, it goes to show we should "dare" to make mistakes and learn from them... or enjoy the "victories" if we hit a bulls eye! :D
