"entre irónicos " constituyen un modismo ? Se refieren a "ojillos"

No estaría mal un poco de contexto. Será una respuesta a una pregunta explícita o implícita de "¿Para qué ...?" Sin contexto, optaría por "¿Para qué hacerlo?" (y entonces la frase tuya quiere decir "No hay razones").

Creo que Pjt33 va bien encaminado, pero lo mejor es si nos das la oración entera...

si, mejor con el contecto.
Por ejemplo " no hay para qué " suele ser una manera cortés de decir "de nada" según el contexto
-"muchas gracias"
- "no hay de qué"

- Hay mucho para agradecerle"
-" No hay para qué"

La frase nos permitiría una mejor traducción.

Bueno .La frase es la siguiente:
De un buen salto (que no hay para qué llamar felino
0el nativo se puso enfrente y exclamó:

Muchas gracias ,pero que pasa con la segunda frase ?alguna proposición.

El contexto es necesario para cualquier expresión que necesite explicarse, pero "entre irónicos" por sí mismo no quiere decir nada.
Quiero creer que son unos "ojillos entre irónicos y (algo más)", que querría decir que la mirada de esa persona tiene un matiz irónico, pero mezclada con alguna otra expresión.


"Entre [algo] y [algo]" quiere decir que algo está a medio camino entre un punto y otro.

· Un sabor entre amargo y dulce - el sabor tiene matices amargos y dulces.
· Un color entre verde y azul - el color tiene componentes azules y verdes.
· Una nectarina es una fruta entre durazno y ciruela.

Ortega y Gasset said "Yo soy yo y mis circunstancias". And any group of words, out of context, could mean nothing and everything.

If you can provide the context that will help us to help you... so everyone can be assisting and assisted... which is a noble cause...

Example,

Sus comentarios entre irónicos y sarcásticos al principio, acabaron siendo afables y amistosos... y le ayudaron a comprender la situación.

Although I still find the use of "entre irónicos" without a complement very strange, I think it's a subtle ellipsis, where Monterroso avoids mentioning the fact that the "little eyes" belong to a dead head. It could be easy to imagine something like "entre irónicos y muertos", for example. (I think the use of "entre" here could be also expressed by "casi".)
Since Mr. Taylor has established some sort of relationship with the head, he attributed expressions to it like irony, a smile and gratitude for "making eye contact" with it. (I think this also adds to the answer about the use of the word "deferencia", that has been posted in another thread).

I tend to agree with Angélica. (I rather consider the original Spanish a bit flawed on this sentence, as no Spanish native speaker will get it at first glance... much less checking the dictionary...)

The 'subtle' ellipsis theory seems the only way to 'justify it'.

@Pablo: Right. Monterroso is not an author who would make a mistake. If there is no "error de imprenta", that's the explanation I find to it. :)

Well, I was about to simply acknowledge what you say, but in looking further, or on a second thought, it seems that the "error de imprenta" (a minor one) could be the best explanation.

entre- Elemento prefijo correspondiente a «entre». ¤ Expresa situación intermedia: ‘entretela, entrecubierta, entrepierna’. ¤ Calidad intermedia: ‘entrefino’. ¤ Acción que se realiza incompletamente: ‘entrever’. ¤ Mezcla o combinación de cosas: ‘entretejer’.

I.e., the word would be "entreirónicos" (as you mention on the "casi" option)

"Ojos entreirónicos" then, would mean "eyes that were somewhat ironic/sarcastic looking".

It seems to me that that would be the more plausible explanation.

Gracias por su ayuda preciosa.Creo que las exlanaciones que me han dado ,(si exclusimos el "error de prensa" ) van bien con el sentido que yo habia elegido por instinto.Es decir ojos casi irónicos , o poquito sarcasticos.
