Here´s the Wikipedia article on favela, which says it´s basically a shanty town. No estoy seguro si es una palabra muy común en español o no.

A shack in a shanty town is called "chabola" in Spain. "Favela" is also used if it's based in Brasil/Latinamerica, because "favela" means "shanty town" in portuguiese, and when we heard "favela" we always think of the Brasilian suburban quarters.
"favela" as "chabola" in Latinamerica it's in the RAE, so it's an official word.

Saludos :D
