I think the word in English is staples

Are you talking about the threads that are always at the top of a section? If you are, they're called stickies.

If artículos de primera necesidad is the same as canasta básica in Mexico, or alimento básico then the translation would be staple food or staples.

Edit: If the meaning is more general, then I'd translate it as basic necessities.
