Welcome to the forums, Winfred!

There are may ways to start learning Spanish. Some people take a class with a teacher, or hire a private tutor. Some people learn at home using self-teaching books, tapes or videos. Some people visit another country and take a class there. Some people try other methods. Other people may tell you about their favorite methods, or about how they started to learn Spanish.

I took the 3-year class in my high school, then lived in Central America for several weeks, then took several university classes in conversation, writing, and literature. Since then I've bought and used some advanced textbooks, and sometimes I read books or magazines or watch videos in Spanish.
