Another help with a text

Hi

Here is another text I have translated. Could you as usual, correct me if needed please

Los niños de la familia del piso de arriba vinieron ayer a jugar con mi gato. Ellos aman a mi gato y creo que esperen que se lo dé. No creo que pueda hacerlo : a su madre no le gustan los gatos.

In "Ellos aman a mi gato" ... I wasnt sure if "quieren" would be a better option since it can also mean that they want my cat.. and the next phrase does refer to it that they hope i will give my cat to them... but do tell me if its wrong

Is this correct ? :

No creo que puedo hacerlo ? Y si hablara de otra persona por ej. "i dont think he could do it" : No creo que pueda hacerlo ?

So whenever the subject and the verb is also in same person (Yo) will not be in subjuntive mood?

what about : I dont think I will come to the party today ? - No creo que vengo a la fiesta hoy . ?

No, if the conjugated form of the verb creer in the main clause is negated and there's no change in subject in what follows, you should use the infinitive and not create a subordinate clause.

No change in subject (affirmative verb in the main clause)
Creo que puedo hacerlo.
Creo que no puedo hacerlo.
-or-
Creo poder hacerlo. (no subordinate clause needed)

No change in subject (negative verb in the main clause)
No creo poder hacerlo.

(There are areas where the subjunctive is used even when the subject doesn't change, but I believe this is frowned upon.)

Change in subject (affirmative verb in the main clause)
Creo que puedes hacerlo.
Creo que no puedes hacerlo.

Change in subject (negative verb in the main clause)
No creo que puedas hacerlo.

Quote:
Y si hablo de otra persona, por ej., "I don't think he can do it"
No creo que pueda hacerlo.

Creo que no venga a la fiesta. (indicative mood needed in the second clause)
Creo que no vengo a la fiesta.
Creo que ella no viene a la fiesta.

No.

Creo que no viene a la fiesta.

Because you have an affirmative form of 'creer' in the main clause verb, you should use the indicative mood in the secondary clause.

No creo que (yo/él/ella) venga a la fiesta... (otras opciones distintas)

Ellos aman a mi gato -- yo no usaría esta expresión, sino "a ellos les encanta mi gato" o "ellos están muy encariñados con mi gato"...
