Preterite and Imperfect Confusion Practice

Hey guys, I've been confused about when to use preterite vs. imperfect verbs. I was instructed to complete this story, and its due tomorrow. If you could aid me in understanding whether to conjugate into preterite or imperfect it would be very helpful to me. I feel like I would be able to teach myself the reasoning if I actually knew the correct one to use. Thanks in advance.

(Empezar) a examinarme y a hacerme preguntas. Yo (ponserse) nerviosa y (callarse).

You can start by using preterite in actions that happened only once and situations that are clearly finished, and the imperfect for describing the frame of an event and for habits or repeated actions.
